Yesterday I was called over to the Pediatric Hospital to see a mom with
her sixth baby who was born 10 days previously with arthrogryposis, (
the presence of multiple joint contractures). This mom had breastfed
all of her children for at least 2 years, and was having trouble getting
this little girl to latch. At this point we did not have all the
results of all the tests, but in two separate attempts to get the baby
to latch, I felt that the mandibular joints are affected. I was
wondering if any of you have had any experience with babies with this
syndrome who have successfully breastfed. This would be very comforting
to the mother. I would appreciate permission to show her any posts that
may be encouraging.
I am also wondering if this would be a case for CST to increase mobility
of the joints. Any ideas??
Initial CT did show spinal involvement, but we won't know for sure until
Sunday.
