Thanks for posting the article on the formula supplemented with probiotics
(acidophilus, bifidus)! I have long believed in the benefits of probiotics,
and added it to whatever formula I have needed to give my adopted children
in a nursing supplementer (usually Lact-Aid). My favorite formulation of it
is Primadophilus for Children, which is a tasteless powder that dissolves
completely enough to go through a Lact-Aid tube without clogging it. I
believe it made a noticable difference, based partly on what I saw happen,
the times I ran out of it for a while.

I would have to wonder if formula that already had the probiotics in it
would be that useful, though, because the bacteria are pretty delicate and I
doubt that the conditions at which the formula was kept could be controlled
carefully enough to guarantee that they would remain viable. I think I
would opt to continue to recommend that mothers who need to use formula add
the probiotics to it. I also recommend that even totally breast milk fed
babies get the probiotics for a while if they have been on antibiotics.

I guess this is like with other things found in breast milk that companies
are attempting to add to formula to make it "more like breast milk", where
we don't want people to be using it as an excuse not to breastfeed. It is a
bit like the question of whether teaching your kids about using condoms to
prevent pregnancy and disease constitutes giving them permission to be
promiscuous.

Aloha,
Darillyn
