I asked Jack Newman MD about the request for studies re: brick dust
urine, etc. His response was "Right, Kathleen. The only thing that is
at issue here is observation of the breastfeeding. If the baby is
breastfeeding well, the brick dust urine will go away and there is no
issue. If the baby is not breastfeeding well, then we fix the
breastfeeding, and the brick dust urine will go away. The issue is, why
was the baby not breastfeeding well and why did we let it ride? The
fact that formula fed babies do not get brick dust urine is that they
are *overloaded* with fluids. Where is the proof that babies should get
so much fluid in the first few days?

Jack Newman MD."

Fixing the breastfeeding is what needs to get done *always*, and in the
case of brickdust urine, that is just another sign to do it fast. I
mean, what is the alternate thinking here? To stop breastfeeding? It
may mean to get professional breastfeeding help, which might be *gasp*
too radical a thought. Tongue in cheek.
