Perhaps I have missed it, but I have not noticed any discussion on the
diapers the baby with the severe problem is wearing. As a life-long
sufferer of skin problems, I look at contact allergies immediately. I also
REALLY sympathize with any baby who has skin problem! To have such a thing
on the diaper area is especially miserable.

When I adopted my second son, at four weeks old, his poor little bottom had
been eaten alive. There was an extensive area where the skin had been eaten
away. One spot had been eaten so deeply that it left a permanent scar. I
was told that this was due to the formula, but I recognized what it was
right away. I took him home, got rid of the Huggies he had been in, and put
him into my carefully washed cloth diapers. It started looking better in
just hours and, by the next morning, there was no more broken skin, and the
problem never came back. I had started trying to nurse him with the
Lact-Aid, but had no preparation at all, and no milk yet. He was still
getting the same formula that I had been told was the cause of the problem,
so I am really certain the diapers were what made the difference.

My fourth baby had a similar problem, with skin being eaten away, when the
diaper service we had been using changed their fabric softener. She was the
only one of their customers who had any problem with the change, and the
product had been tested extensively, for use specifically for diaper
service, by the manufacturer. What I am getting at is that it is possible
for an individual child to have a terrible reaction to even something that
has been used with large numbers without problems.

So, if what is touching this baby's skin has not been thoroughly
investigated, I would do so immediately. My first choice would be cloth
that had been washed and rinsed very carefully, and finished with a full
cycle with a small amount of soap flakes. I would also use a double later
and no plastic pants or anything that could cut down the air circulation.

I would think that the leaking of stools could be due to stimulation of the
anus created by the pain from the skin problem. I would also do the
acidophilus, especially internally. There are milk-free, powder
preparations for babies that are very easy to administer. One of my
favorites is Primadophilus for Children, which you can find on an internet
search.

I hope something is found to give this poor baby some relief, and soon!

Aloha,
Darillyn
