Dear all
Last week I emailed requesting references in relation to misinformation in
the Bounty Babycare book in Austrlia. I had previously emailed the
marketing company and the Paediatrician who reviews editorial material about
breeches of the WHO code particularly in relation to advertising material
the book contained (as well as writing to the Health Minister ) However I
also had concerns that they were not recommending exclusive breastfeeding
till six months as well as some other issues and the Paediatrician requested
references to back up what I wrote.
I didn't receive any references from Lactnet members but nevertheless put
together a 4 page submission to the Paediatrician and emailed a copy to the
marketing company. The long and the short is that the marketing company has
accepted the criticisms I made about the book, they are going to examine
how they can improve the advertising and editorial content regards how it
fits into the scope of the WHO code and will broaden the expertise of people
involved in reviewing the publication including looking at having a
lactation consultant involved in vetting the material.
The Paediatrician who reviews the content has assured me he will ensure that
the WHO position on breastfeeding is spelt out clearly in the Book's next
edition and he thanked me for my efforts in correcting the material in the
book and told me he hoped that I would keep up my strong advocacy role.
I am very happy with the results of my efforts over the last few days and
feel confident that the almost 250 000 bounty bags distributed each year in
Australia will be WHO code compliant by next year. Good evidence based
information can be very powerful.
