Karleen,
There are enough immune properties in pasteurized human milk to make this a
viable option. Beyond that, human milk is so easily digested as to heal the
poor baby's system until she can start making some immunities of her own.
Let us know how this works out.
I started my career in lactation 24 years ago while donating milk to a very
ill adopted baby with failure to thrive. In just 2 weeks, his body healed
and he could begin to tolerate a special formula. The mother cried as she
thanked us for saving her baby's life. This is an issue very close to my
heart.

Subject: pasteurised donor milk and immune properties
Can someone tell me how much of the immune properties of human milk remain
after pasteurisation? I have a friend with a daughter adopted a few months
ago who is coming down with every illness under the sun (she is almost never
well). Tests etc have not found anything wrong, I think her immune system is
depleted because of stress. I was going to suggest to her mum that she
consider seeing if she can get some donor human milk informally (no milk
banks in Sydney!) but wondered if she pasteurised it how this would impact
the ability of the milk to assist in this situation?
I'd appreciated informed advise promptly....we're going to China tomorrow!
