Dear Lactnetters,
I'm happy to say that finally an OB/GYN in my community prescribed
Domperidone for a client of mine. There has been a lot of resistance to
Domperidone in my community due to an unfortunate incident involving a local
IBCLC and the alleged prescribing of Domperidone. So after over a year of
faxing info on Domperidone (when it seemed appropriate) to the different
doctors of different clients, everything seemed to come together. The bad
news was that the local compoundng pharmacy wanted to charge $275 for 120
20mg tablets (a 30-day supply). The family understandably had to re-think
how important was *possibly* increasing the mom's supply.
Luckily, I had gotten a marketing letter from a compounding pharmacy in
California and it turns out that their same 30-day supply cost a little less
than $100! So I shared that info with the family and the doctor and they
took it from there and she is now taking the Domperidone. This compounding
pharmacy in California shipped the domperidone overnight for $15, which
still left if dramatically less expensive. I only hope it has some
effect!!!!!
Now I wonder about the Oxytocin spray that this same compounding pharmacy
mixed up for another client last year and charged her over $100 for the
tiniest little spray bottle. From now on, I'll encourage doctors and
families to shop around. I did also encourage this family to confront the
local compounding pharmacy with the price discrepancy to see if they would
lower their prices, but they just wanted to get the domperidone and be done
with it.
My points in this post are:
1) If your local compounding pharmacy charges ridiculously high prices,
check other pharmacies!!!!
2) Keep giving information to the docs, it eventually sinks in.
Regards,
Cindi Swisher, RN, IBCLC
