I agree with all the points that Linda made re the starter SNS and thanks
Linda for the tip about the leaking and sterilization. I figured that it
wasn't meant to be sterilized but didn't realize it could be worked around
like that. Thanks!

A couple of additional points I'd like to mention...

I like the starter SNS better in some ways than the regular one because:

1) It looks less intimidating.
2) You can use any standard bottle (in fact, I purchase the ones without a
bottle and they are a tiny bit less expensive) which means that mom doesn't
lose any milk after she pumps. She can just put the starter SNS cap on the
bottle that she pumped into.
3) With the reservoir it is possible to put a small amount of milk for the
baby to get immediately using gravity drainage and when that is gone, the
baby has to actually suck to get any milk. That helps mom and me know if
baby is really getting an effective suck, without having to use my
stethoscope which mom won't have at home anyway. If we want more gravity
drainage, we just "prime" some more milk into the reservoir.

From Linda's post, I understand that a vacuum should be formed which draws
milk into the reservoir, but I have found that unless baby is sucking well
this doesn't happen. Milk does flow by gravity, but it doesn't draw milk
into the reservoir unless baby sucks. Am I misunderstanding how this works
Linda? Or am I using it wrong?

In any case, I still only use them or recommend them when I think it'll be
more than one or two days using it, but less than a week or so. With a
short time, (1-2 days or less), I'd still stick with the tube & syringe.
It's much too expensive, imo, to use any kind of SNS for less than a day or
two. I also have shown parents how to use it as a fingerfeeder, as I do
with the tube and syringe.

Regards,
