Shortly after I started working with newborns in a hospital setting (7 years
ago) and had witnessed this clenching, I found a reference book on our shelves
that said that in some infants due to neurological immaturity the jaw may
clench and that this should fade away by about two weeks time.
If it doesn't, the baby may have some neurological issues. I can try to find
it at work today. I think it was either in a maternal child health text or a
pediatric one.
