The 5 S's have been a real life-saver for many moms that I have worked
with.  The moms in our support group love the techniques, and each mom that
I recommend the video to comes back with the same response.  Perhaps
there's not a calming "reflex", but the babies that I've used the 5 S's
with get that same starry-eyed look that the babies in the video have, and
they calm down just as quickly.
