Nancy writes: The Mom of one of our premies stopped pumping because of a
recurring feeling
of tunnel vision, increased anxiety and irritability each time she started to
pump. She tried for several days, but just gave up because the feelings were
unbearable. She has no history of psychiatric disorders, medications or
sexual abuse that we could ascertain.
Any ideas?
No ideas, Nancy, but I worked with one of our very committed NICU moms who
had a feeling of overwhelming depression whenever she pumped. She persisted in
pumping and kind of reluctantly mentioned it to us. Baby was a good nurser and
as far as I know when she finally began to brfd she no longer experienced this
feeling. Baby was a 27 weeker so she pumped for many weeks. I can get in
touch with her and find out when the feelings of depression (it might have been
anxiety as well) with pumping subsided. I truly thought it was physiological
and not psychological but who knows.
