I haven't seen the original letter - just this resume:
"Tappin D, Brooke H, Ecob R.
Bedsharing and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Scotland, UK.
Correspondence.
Lancet 2004;363(9413):994.
The letter discusses the article published in January 2004 in the Lancet
(Carpenter RG et al.) pointing out the small risk of sudden infant death
syndrome (SIDS) for infants younger than 8 weeks who bedshare with a
non-smoking mother. A national study in Scotland was carried out to examine
the risk of bedsharing using data from 1996-2000. The results showed a
strong interaction between bedsharing during the last sleep and infant age
for the risk of SIDS. The authors conclude that parents should not be
encouraged to bedshare for sleep with young infants. "
Any study like this should control for infants showing signs of
illness. Infants who are poorly or fretful are possibly more likely
to be taken into bed for comfort, and the ensuing tragedy may be a
result of the illness, not the bed sharing....surely?
