Hello everyone,
Here is a media release I recently sent out, and I just wanted to mine the
minds on lactnet for any ideas, suggestions, or help. Also please feel
free to send this message to anyone who you think might be interested.
Cheers,
Mandi Porta, BSN, IBCLC

2nd Annual International Breastfeeding Photography Competition - Volunteers
and Sponsors sought

What started as a small local photography competition last year, exploded
with international entries and is now looking to hold the competition again
but this time with the aim of trying to help non profit breastfeeding
advocates around the world.

It is estimated that every day 4000 children die from unsafe bottle-
feeding. Coalition spokesperson, Mandi Porta, said the competition had
become a way to provide a resource to breastfeeding advocates to help
address this needless loss.

Last year what started as a local breastfeeding photography competition
became a huge success with triple the expected number of entries and a very
well received exhibition. New Zealand Minister of Women’s Affairs, Hon.
Ruth Dyson and New Zealand Minister of Health, Hon Annette King, joined the
Hutt Valley Breastfeeding Coalition to kick off the exhibition and hand out
the prizes.

After last year’s competition, the coalition was swamped with requests to
use the images to promote breastfeeding in remote parts of the world. “Due
to the competition rules we were unable to allow it,” Mrs. Porta said. “So
this year we have changed the rules and plan on taking it a step further.
Our vision is to create a database of high quality, high resolution images
that will be available free to non-profit groups to promote breastfeeding
on a global scale.”

Fifty images will also be selected and will go on tour of New Zealand to
promote breastfeeding. There has already been interest expressed worldwide
for the images to travel out of our country once our exhibit has finished.

Requests for help with the project are being sent worldwide in order to
gain sponsorship for the prize categories. There is also a need for the
housing of the database of the images and donated server space will need to
be found.

Anyone who knows of possible sponsors, with no ties to the formula
industry, who would benefit from reaching breastfeeding families and
photographers worldwide, are welcome to contact the coalition for more
details.

Entry forms and contest rules will be available at www.breastfeeding.org.nz
in the first week of February.
