Dear Christine,
In response to your question about NRP certification for RN, LCs: In my hospital every RN working on the unit must be NRP certified. I no longer work as a staff nurse but have personally walked into a patient room to assist with breastfeeding and found a situation where resuscitation was needed. You may be the only nurse in the room and need to know what to do. The immediate newborn period is a vulnerable time when anything can happen, probably more so in the hospital where so many "helpful" birth process interventions take place.
As to your other question about alternative feeding methods: I will do it/teach it to the parents in situations where I feel it would be helpful and have a few nurses who will cup feed as well. We do not have a formal policy concerning cup or finger-feeding. On the other hand we do not have one that forbids it either!
