Dear Jessica,
As far as I am aware there have been no documented cases of cross
contamination from second/third/etc-hand pump use. There is a theoretical
risk, but until someone documents such a contamination we can't really say
with the utmost certainty that using the pump is dangerous, especially if
they are using a steralized "kit". (Please, no flames, I know what Medela
says) I think we need to tell parents the risks and let them make their own
decision. What I emphasize, though, is the motor life and as the motor
loses effeciency, pumping volumes can decrease and all the while the mother
thinks it's *her*, but it is really the pump.
Regarding pump trials of the one-mom pumps, in my store I use the rental
version of the pump for the pump trial and tell the mothers that the feel is
similar. So, for instance, if the mother loves the feel of the Medela
Symphony over the Medela Lactina, she would probably prefer the PNS Advanced
vs. the PNS Original or Traveler. I don't sell any other single user pumps,
but I imagine you could do the same thing with those to offer a trial.
Hope that helps,
