It sounds like the baby this thread has both social and physiological issues
going on, and might be able to benefit from some of the same things that
helped my Julia. Lack of warmth and affection might be a huge part of the
problem. I would suggest that the mother try holding her as much as
possible. If the baby isn't used to this, she may need to ease into it. I
held Julia with her little bum on my hip, facing away from me, for much of a
day or two. After that, she became comfortable being held on my hip, facing
toward me. We then progressed to a sling, and then a front pack. I believe
that this was very important in getting Julia to start gaining weight, on
the same or fewer calories than what they had been pumping in through a
gastrostomy.

I found that there were two problems with the bottle feeds that they had
been trying to get Julia taking. For one thing, the taste of the
Pregestimil gagged her! It makes alot of sense that someone who gags easily
would have a hard time with something vile tasting, but no one had thought
of it. Also, she had been fed with premie nipples, supposedly because she
wasn't strong enough to use any others. I found that she actually had a
very strong suck so, whenever she sucked at a bottle, she got a big gulp of
the vile tasting stuff. Perhaps something similar is going on with this
other baby.

I would also strongly suggest that this baby's mother hold her for all
feedings that she is present for, and not let the baby hold the bottle.
She should be as loving and attentive as possible, during feeds, and avoid
distractions, when she can. I would also try smaller, more frequent, feeds,
including waking the baby up a time or two at night, if she does not wake up
to feed. This would help her hold down what she does take in, and also help
her learn to see feeding as something positive. None of us would be anxious
to eat, either, if it usually made us throw up!

I sure hope something can be found to help this baby, soon!
