If newborn frenotomy is done correctly, you definitely are right about an anesthetic injection probably being more painful!

You're probably familiar with this article on ankyloglossia  and treatment by Jeanne Ballard, MD, (at: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/110/5/e63) but I find "questioning" docs can be more receptive when the info comes from someone they've heard of and respect. (Dr. Ballard is also the creator/developer of the Ballard Newborn Gestational Age Assessment tool, which most pedis are familiar with.) When pedi residents rotate through our University Hospital NICU and pedi postpartum, they learn to assess for tongue tie. And her approach to frenulum clipping with these pedi residents is that they "see one, do one, teach one."
