Hi, All: One other situation I have been caught in the midst of on
occasion is a mother who "shops around" and is comparing notes between
LCs. If I find out, either from the mother herself or the other LC(s) that
this mom has been seen already, I refuse to take her on, unless she is
ready to commit to one LC. I think this avoids "conflicting" advice and
potential awkwardness between all involved. Styles of practice can differ
greatly with none being wrong, but that is not necessarily what the mother
will perceive.
I see your point, but I think that because advice does vary, a mom can
find herself in a position where she is getting advice that is not working
in her situation or simply that she does not have a good relationship with
her LC. Personally, I saw one LC when I delivered (in an attempt to be
proactive), a second who was affiliated with the same hospital in which I
delivered after we developed latch-on problems and poor weight gain, but
it was the third who is affiliated with the hospital at which I work who
did the best job of working with me on my son's latch and suggested the
intervention which ultimately saved our breastfeeding (nipple shields).
True, I don't know that the 1st or 2nd LC would not have eventually
suggested it, but by that point I was uncomfortable with them and had lost
trust in them. Sometimes, trusting that someone will get you through
something is a major factor in getting through it! I've done the same
thing with doctors (I changed OBGYNs because of a bad personality match)
and I would respect any patient who would do the same with me.
