I have permission to post. I have a second time mom who with her first had
mastitis and plugged ducts in alternating breasts once a month at the same
time each month. She finally weaned at six weeks. She doesn't remember having
any cracked nipples but latch on pain for several weeks. She also has a somewhat
crusty covering to both her nipples, both dark brown to black in appearance.
We discussed the use of lecithin as an emulsifier and also the impotance
of keeping skin clean (dip and swish Barbara!!) and trying to loosen the
thicker tissue on her nipples. We also discussed the possibility that the first
infection never really cleared. The odd thing is that the episodes were as
regular as a menstrual cycle. Any hormonal relationship? Anybody have any
suggestions? Has anyone heard of something like this?
Thank you -----Allyson Michaels RN, IBCLC
P.S. anybody know of DHEA use in BF women?
