I just spoke with a reporter at the Wall Street Journal who contacted me
about an article she is writing about compounding pharmacies and
domperidone. She said she is receiving conflicting information about
whether or not it is legal to dispense domperidone in the US.

She said that from her research, she is finding that domperidone is the
only commonly prescribed drug in the US that is not FDA approved (she
understands that it has not been disapproved). A representative at the
FDA, however, told her it is not legal to dispense domperidone in the
US. I told her that my understanding is that while it may not be legal to
dispense the drug manufactured by Jensen through standard US pharmacies,
its ingredients can be legally compounded in a compounding pharmacy by a
physician's prescription. I gave her the number of our local compounding
pharmacist for confirmation.

She had also just spoken to a representative at the AAP, who told her they
did NOT approve the drug and believe it to be very dangerous because it can
cause heart dysfunction. She had viewed the AAP's webpage that clearly
lists domperidone as "approved." I told her I wondered if the person she
spoke to was misinformed.

I discussed its benefits and limited risks, and why I have seen it to be a
beneficial drug in certain circumstances for certain breastfeeding
mothers. I clearly stated that it is not a first-line treatment.

During our discussion, I mentioned the Good Housekeeping article, of which
she was not aware, and refuted its inaccuracies.

I gave her Dr. Hale and Dr. Nice's contact information as expert resources
for this issue. I'll be very interested in the article she writes. Those
of you who subscribe, please keep an eye out for it.
