Taught a breastfeeding class the other night. I recently changed some of my slides to reflect the newer language of breastfeeding promotion. Instead of speaking about the immunological benefits of breastfeeding I now speak of the immunological risks of formula feeding. Additionally, I had someone ask whether they would need to supplement their breastfed baby with vit D. I responded to the question and then asked how many of the class (about 30 people) had heard something about breastfed babies needing vitamin D supplementation. Virtually everyone raised their hand. I then asked how many had heard of the infant deaths in Israel this last November due to formula manufacturer error or the recall of a popular new DHA formula for possible bacterial contamination during the same month. Not one person raised their hand. I asked the class to think about this discrepancy and offered my opinion as to the capital driven nature of it. For the first time in 6 years of teaching this class I got back several not so wonderful evaluations and negative comments such as "too much time spent bashing formula" and " a little too strong in her opinions" (actually I've gotten that second one a lot, just never on a Breastfeeding class evaluation).
Diane,
The quote above my desk is by Sidney J Harris: "The first great rule in life is to put up with things. The second is to refuse to put up with things. And the third, and hardest, is distinguishing between the first two."
