..."There is an old, old case report of a bfg woman who was in a coach
accident (horse driven) and whose milk supply abruptly dried up from the
shock (it was surmised.) I spent a few min. looking for the ref. It
wasn't in Lawrence's text (which was where I thought I recall reading it.)
Does anyone remember that reference?"
I did find this reference in Lawrence's text to stress-induced lactation
failure (pg 514, '99 edition):
"Two such cases have been reported in the literature by Ruvalcaba after the
Mexico City earthquake in 1985. Stress-induced lactation failure is
described in a gravida 3 woman, 24 years old, who had been exclusively
breastfeeding for 3 months and had fed two previous children for 14 and 18
months. The day of the quake, the building she was in collapsed. She ran
home to her children past demolished buildings and could not produce a drop
of milk when her infant suckled then or subsequently. Multiple attempts
over the next weeks failed to produce a drop. The second woman was 39 weeks
pregnant and had been dripping colostrum for several weeks as she had with
her previous three pregnancies. The day of the quake, her house collapsed,
her husband and two children were missing for several hours, and her sister
was killed. She never leaked another drop of colostrum and was never able
to breastfeed. Ruvelcaba RHA: Stress-induced cessation of lactation
