I have a mom I've been helping who is returning to work in a few weeks and
starting to substitute bottle feedings of expressed milk for her baby to get
her used to the bottle. She believes she should start to mimic the way the
feedings will be when she's back at work, meaning she should switch to
exclusive bottle feeding during the day so her baby will get used to that
schedule of just bottle feeding during the hours in which she'll be away.
She's an OB/GYN, so she'll likely be away long hours on some days. I told
her I thought it would be sufficient to give one or two bottles a day for
the last couple of weeks before she returns to work.

Here's my question: I thought this especially to be true because I remember
learning that the saliva in the baby's mouth getting on the nipple causes a
reaction that produces greater benefits for the baby in terms of the
antibodies in the milk as opposed to drinking the same expressed milk from a
bottle. But the Breastfeeding Answer Book had no reference to this. Can
anyway enlighten me as to where to find it?

Please respond off list, too as I am pretty much no mail these days.

Thanks in advance,
Julie Rosen, LLLL in NJ, CD (DONA)
