Linda has told us of a very interesting observation regarding what I have
been hearing since these DHA/ARA supplemented formulas hit the market. Many
babies suffer diarrhea from consuming them. Please report this as an adverse event
to the FDA MedWatch surveillance system on the FDA website at www.fda.gov. It
is very important that any side effects from the use of these products be
reported to both MedWatch and the manufacturer. We very much need a trail of
reports demonstrating this as a problem. My concern follows a reasoning about the
question if babies are also losing fat soluable vitamins and other nutrients
through the stool (besides water). Are these babies at risk for dehydration,
hypernatremia, and any form of malnutrition? What are parents told by the nurses
about these formulas? Are parents advised ahead of time that this could be a
problem and what to do about it? Are nurses at risk for malpractice if they do
not warn parents ahead of time when they know full well the large potential
for side effects? This is a rather glaring omission in care and I always wonder
what the hospital's risk management people and ethics committee would think
about this issue or if they would care.
