My first suggestion is usually skin-to-skin, but with a really frantic baby
I find the five Ss useful. Especially when a mother has missed baby's
feeding cues and we have a screaming, disorganised baby to deal with. Once
baby is calm enough to latch, we can then talk about baby's cues so as to
hopefully avoid this frustrating situation again. So many mothers and staff
try to ram the breast into a crying newborn's mouth - resulting at best in a
shallow latch, but usually just more crying and fighting at the breast.
Adults don't enjoy a meal when upset and crying, neither does baby.
