A quick warning for all. Lamaze magazine offers free magazines to WIC
mom's. This month they included a separate insert from Walmart Gift
Registry full of advertising. There is a disclaimer statement in the front
that "The articles appearing in this catalogue were produced especially for
Wal-Mart by the publishers of Baby Steps in cooperation with NAPNAP, the
National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners... The information in
this catalog is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, may
represent opinion or judgement. The catalogue providers do not guarantee
the accuracy or completeness of any information and shall not be held liable
for any loss or damage caused, directly or indirectly, by or from the
information. All information should be considered a supplement to- and not
a substitute for- care provided by a liscensed healthcare provider."
I find the information on breastfeeding to be very negative. Helpful quotes
from breastfeeding mom's (pg.5) say, "I was amazed how often he wanted to
nurse. He'd be hungry every two hours and then nurse for a full hour. With
only one hour off every two hours, I guess you could say I also was
surprised how little I could get done! Garretts crying didn't bother me."
The emphasis is on how difficult nursing can be and to offer alternatives.
There is a two page Nestle Carnation Goodstart and one page Emfamil
advertisement in the middle. Under an article called "Baby, Let's Eat!" it
starts out talking about "Q:What are the advantages and disadvantages of
breastfeeding?". It gives some information on breastfeeding (two
paragraphs). The rest of the article (22 paragraphs) talk about
bottlefeeding and starting solids.

I would highly recommend that those of us that work in WIC clinics take a
look at this insert and stop passing them out. I think a letter to Lamaze
Magazine (Lamaze Publishing Company, iVillage Parenting Network, Inc., 9
Old King's Highway South, Darien, CT 60820. or (203)656-3600) and the NAPNAP
would be in order. I do not think Lamaze has inaccurate breastfeeding
information in general but that they forwarded this unaware of the content
of the advertisement insert. I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt.
This experience has shone me the importance of a review of all freebies
before allowing them into the hands of pregnant moms. Shame on Walmart.
