Today, while visiting the Corcoran Museum in Washington DC, we saw a
painting in their American School collection called "Maternity" painted by
Gari Melchers ca 1913. It was a beautiful image of an American mother
breastfeeding her toddler -- who had one sock on and one sock off (cute, and
so realistic.) The museum notes on one of other Melcher's paintings
indicated that Melcher painted women in domestic scenes on very large
canvases because it symbolized the proportions of a hero. How nifty that
this was thus a portrait of a breastfeeding hero of almost a hundred years
ago!
