Hi Sally!

I have found Dr. Karp's video to be very well received in the breastfeeding
support groups I lead at an outpatient breastfeeding clinic here in Lincoln.
I think the reason it works so well there is that most of the moms have
babies three months old or younger and often there is at least one in the
group who has read Dr. Karp's book or has already seen the video. One mom
even said she had checked out the video at our local library. I was pleased
to hear the library is making videos like this available!

It seems to me that there are many great parenting books available, but a
mom with a fussy baby would be hard pressed to find the time to read one.
So this video is a nice option. It also seems to be reasonably priced
compared to some other videos. It is not a technical video, but one that
the mom/dad/caregiver may be able to watch over and over and loan out to
friends. Maybe it should be shown at baby showers!

The video excludes some of the more controversial of Dr. Karp's ideas for
calming fussy babies, e.g., the suggestion for putting babies in swings for
what some people consider to be long periods of time, that are found in the
book. I think it is great that you are emphasizing the important "Ss" to
new parents - skin-to-skin and suckling at the breast. In my opinion, these
are key to calming most babies and certainly not all babies need to be
swaddled. Using a sling is another option for helping mom to keep the baby
close, but giving her the freedom to use her hands.

I have thought about using the video in a LLL meeting, but haven't tried it
there, yet. The video (but not the book) is approved for use in LLL
libraries and I have urged moms to check it out from our group's library.
