Recently, while doing home visits, I have started putting 3 Tablespoons of
water in a clean diaper and then hand it to the parents and say, "This is what
we are looking for in a wet diaper, it should 'feel' like this and be about
this heavy" It has been a great tool. Then, when I do a follow-up phone call,
they know exactly what I am inquiring about. If the baby has been off to a
bad start, and not feeding well, I explain that it may be 12 - 24 hours before
the diapers feel that way. It is amazing how many 'ah ha' moments I get
with that one. Many clients will call and say, "I thought we had wet diapers,
NOW I get it!'

Another sign I tell parents is a 'wet mouth' "Can you SEE the milk around
the mouth? When the baby comes off the breast is he/she a milky mess? Are the
LIPS wet? When you put your finger inside your baby's mouth does it feel
wet??" "Does the the baby have the above mentioned signs AND looks like a
drunken sailor, or at least looks like he/she should not be driving any heavy
equipment?"

These are some gentle ways to put the mom back in control and proactive
toward her babys' health and well being.

Just some of my tricks!!!
