Dear Lactnetters, as an oldddddddd! mother baby nurse and nicu nurse the reasons for drying was to prevent hypothermia. In a newborn just delivered of a mother with HIV we had a hospital policy that stated not to give the vit. k shot until all blood and mucus was removed so as not to inject any virus into skin as needle passed thru. Did I question this as scientific, no , did it interfer with bonding ,no, baby was wiped off while on mothers stomach. I would be interested in any further information on this subject as to how this practice effected anything since HIV patients could not breastfeed. Did I miss something? Lois
