First, as I remember it in our hospital, in the days of the baby boom,

My mother tells a story of having to go to 4 different doctors while pregnant in 1957(this was, of course, in the days before HMOs told you what doctor/hospital to go to) to find one who would support her decision to breastfeed. When she finally found one, he was a GP. She explains that she needed her doctor's support so that he could order that her baby be brought to her for feedings. She also tells how her milk seemed to dry up by 6 months. With that feeding regime that Jean describes it doesn't sound like breastmilk production had a chance to get firmly established. Makes me glad I am not fighting those battles!
