I think that anyone with a large private practice sees a fair number of
women with mysteriously low milk production.  It is easy to blame poor
management or the mothers for not "trying hard enough" or holding their
babies enough, or whatever.  I don't discount the effect of those things
because I know that they occur, but the moms I see are usually very well
motivated to breastfeed and want to succeed and do everything they can. Some
of them still end up with strangely low production.  Sometimes we can find a
reason, sometimes we can't.  I have no idea what the percentage is, but in
my practice it is prob. skewed at a higher rate than would be seen in the
general population.  I don't doubt that Dr. Neifert (who has a similar kind
of practice) saw 5% of her patients presenting with this phenomenon.  That
figure may not extrapolate out to the general population.
