Not sure if my own personal study of one is thorough enough yet, but here it
is...

My father died when my daughter was 6 weeks old. I travelled to his funeral
and underwent the most stressful confrontation of my breastfeeding I've ever
encountered. I continued to nurse as much as possible, but had to leave my
family's home to do so, seeing them only at the funeral. I've always nursed
on demand, round the clock, cosleeping with my daughter, and did not allow
my family's disapproval to interrupt that. I ran to my in-laws instead. But,
that week my daughter only pooped once, and my period returned. Coincidence?
I'm delivering my second child in August, so we'll see if my menses return
so early again.

Personally, I imagine that my milk supply was indeed affected by the stress.
I have never limited my daughter's time at the breast, so we fortunately
recovered. But if my milk supply was diminished during that time, it would
certainly explain why she only pooped once that week (which was the only
time she ever went so long between BM's) and why my cycles returned despite
round the clock nursing.

I'm sure hoping that was the case, and this time around I'll experience that
lactational amenorrhea so many rave about!

Caroline
