Linda, Jean, Diane, and Lactnetters,
I think benefits of breastfeeding and risks of alternatives to breastfeeding
(I agree with the point that "risks of infant formula" is too limited) go
quite well together. I have really learned alot reading the various posts on the
benefits and the risks. I believe we all have a grain of truth in our
thoughts and those grains make a fine "beach." (you can tell I'm from a state with
miles of beaches--Florida) A beach in which we all can work together with ideas
that might help our society change its attitude about infant feeding.
A variety of approaches makes sense in a society that is filled with a
variety of cultures and educational backgrounds. How we approach administrators of
policies, governments should be very different from the approach we take with
individuals. When we go to that "bargaining table" we need to ask for more
than we expect and hopefully bargain down to reasonable solutions. There is
plenty of evidence on the risks of alternatives to breastfeeding. That
policymakers refuse to make the changes we desire has alot to do with the unwieldness of
bureaucracies, the momentum needed to create change, the monetary investment
in industries devoted to artificial baby milks/foods, and the investment in
keeping a society fixed on products over relationships.
