I think we all have had the experience of seeing moms who say "that's not
what I was told by "the other nurse, the other LC" or even "you" the day before.
Sometimes they are foggy about the first few encounters and only recall the
parts that made an impression...like what was important to them at the time. I'm
fighting the battle of nurses telling moms to: still pull back on the breast
so baby can breathe, clicking and slurping are "swallowing sounds" (!) pain is
normal and the nipples willl "toughen up." We all have different ways of
communicating and it takes several encounters to ascertain what a mom "can take"
and how she "takes it." I try very hard not to say or give the impresssion that
I am saying that someone else is wrong and I am the only one who is right.
