Hi Everyone,

My daughter's grade 9 class is starting its egg baby program - the one
that is supposed to teach the children how much work it is to parent
because the student is assigned to parent an egg for a week... It
appears from reading the info, that the eggs are formula fed, although
it is not clearly stated - the only mention of feeding is that the
students must write up their experiences, and include a 'cost analysis
that includes the cost of formula, diapers, babysitting, etc'.

Each 'parent' is assigned a series of behaviors that they do with their
egg, including smoking, drinking, doing drugs, etc as well as reading to
the egg, rocking and cuddling, etc so not all the behaviours are
healthy... I am trying to compose a letter to the teacher to bring up
why breastfeeding should be one of the assigned items. I have searched
the archives under a number of different headings, because I know that
some previous letters have been posted, but I cannot find them...

Does anyone have suggestions for me??

This is what I have so far (first draft only - nowhere near ready!!):

Hello Ms X,

I was just reading with great interest the details on the egg baby
project. One thing that was not clear to me was if any of the egg babies
were assigned to be breastfed?

I am a Registered Nurse who works in both Obstetrics and Pediatrics. As
well I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Through
my education and my contact with families I have come to see very
clearly the differences in health displayed by babies fed by different
methods, as well as the financial drawbacks of formula feeding.

While I realize that the feeding method of the egg is only a very small
portion of the egg baby program, I feel that is an excellent time to
introduce future parents to important health behaviours such as
breastfeeding, at a time when they are forming their beliefs and values.
Since the point of this exercise is to teach the students about the
number of important choices that must be made about parenting..... Feels
like I'm rambling and losing my point!

Thanks for any suggestions!
