This is very interesting, and rings true to me. I have been recommending
the use of doulas for just this reason -- a birthing mom needs to feel like
the queen bee, the focus of the hive (whether home or hospital) where she
gives birth, to function well giving birth. And whatever the
interventions/complications at the birth may turn out to be, good postpartum
doula care can make it clear to the mother that at least SOMEBODY knows that
"if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"!
And of course this doesn't even include the value of a knowledgeable support
person in keeping the parents aware of their rights and options in birthing
and caring for their child. The spread of the doula profession has occurred
due to a crying need, and can make all the difference in the establishment
of breastfeeding.
