It is my experience that the majority of first time mothers feel nothing at
let down, or only occasionally, or only in the early days.
Regarding your question about covering your pump rental station when you are
on vacation. I put a message on my machine informing mothers of the dates I
will be away, referring them to other stations to rent pumps. This is lost
business for me, but I have no one to cover my station. Upon my return, if
I find that a mother has tried to return her pump in my absence I do not
charge her late fees. This is not ideal, but I no longer have another
station near me renting the same pumps. When there were, we helped each
other by taking pumps back, exchanging, etc..
