To be truthful, I haven't been reading the e-mails closely, but I noticed in
my March of Dimes Conference booklet that I got yesterday that there's a
session on some of these pt. ed. concerns. It is titled "Patient Education - Why?
How?" and the speaker is Margaret Comerford Freda, Ed.D., RN, CHES, FAAN -
Professor, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Monteflore Medical Center.
Description: Patient Education is a core competency for nurses, yet many
have not received education about the most appropriate ways to present education
to their patients. This presentation will examine the literature on patient
education and will describe how patient education is most effectively given,
how culture impacts on provision of patient education, how literacy and
readability impact on it, and what nurses can do to most effectively teach their
patients. Examples from the literature will be used to help nurses understand more
about teaching for informed consent and issues related to regulatory agencies
and their mandates for patient education.

Though the title "nurse" is used, I do not think it is strictly intended for
nurses. Under the "Who Should attend?" it lists lactation consultants among
the list.

The website address for more information on the conference for anyone
interested is:

The conference is taking place in Chicago, IL on Feb. 22-24, 2004 and CERPS
are being applied for as there's breastfeeding-related topics throughout the
conference.

Just thought some people may be interested in the conference. (Disclaimer: I
do not have any financial involvement in the conference.)
