" They are essentially saying "Our last formula wasn't as good
as we thought, but this new one is just great!", over and over.  And people
keep falling for it! "

This always reminds me of the theme in George Orwell's "1984" where the "Ministry" regularly announces new rations of chocolate, with a headline something like "Chocolate Rations Increase Again" and people become very excited, all the while forgetting that the rations announced previously were actually higher.
