cheryl said, "And then there is my neighbor who is
angry that she has to go to school 3 times a day to
check her daughters blood sugar because she has had
diabetes since she was 3. (Now 8) She wonders why she
was never told about the diabetes risk when she was
pregnant or after the birth and she is angry. There
is diabetes in the family on both sides so she
definitely would have listened."

Cheryl, I don't know where you live, but isnt' the
child entitled to assistance, maybe under the ADA? My
6 yo has a classmate with IDDM and she has a
para-professional whose job is primarily to monitor
her blood sugar and insulin needs. The child does her
own blood draws and shots, but the adult is there to
monitor her, interpret the results and help her figure
out what type of food she should eat. Sage tells me
that there are 2 half time paras who are also parents
of children in the class, btw- that part was important
to Sage. :-)

I know I mentioned "A Map of the Child:A
Pediatrician's Tour of the Body" by Darshak Sanghavi
before my review was posted on Amazon. Check it out
there so I don't have to repeat it all, but wrt IDDM,
I said, "The chapter includes an 8 year old girl who
is diagnosed with Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitis
(IDDM) and we read that "no preventable risk factors
have been identified". Had Dr. Sanghavi read the
literature published in the Lancet, among other
journals, he would have learned that early
introduction to cow's milk is a significant risk
factor in developing IDDM. Most infant formulas are
cow's milk based, therefore, most infants not
breastfed have early cow's milk exposure. If parents
are given that knowledge, that is an easily prevented
risk factor. Why did this pediatrician fail to give it
in this easily read form?" I was *very* disappointed
in this book since I hoped it would be a good source
for thinking parents, but instead, well, read the rest
of my review and you'll get it. :-(
