Julie, I think you are exactly right in believing that
the mom should only give occasional bottles.  It would
probably be even better if the mom gave *no* bottles
and had someone else give a couple  instead, when the
mom isnt' around.

babies are smart.  The baby is likely to be very
confused as to why her mother prefers that she take
the bottle instead of the breast so the baby might
decide the bottle is the way to go.

as far as references; that's a tough one.  Even if
there is no interaction with the saliva, the close
proximity of nursing will increase the immune
stimulation between mother and baby, better than
bottle feeding would.
