I tell parents that inside the uterus babies are cuddled, rocked and
shushed 24/7! So after they are born holding them 12 hours a day may
seem like a lot to use, but as far as a baby is concerned it is an
immediate 50%cut back in cuddling!
I also talk to parents about the concept of the "4th trimester". That
unlike horses (ready to run the first day of life), our babies are more
like fetuses and they miss the soothing rhythmic motion and sound of the
womb.
