Dear extremely wise-ones,

I have a question about the use of ergotamine. A mother who wants to
breastfeeding, is takiong ergotamine due to a prolapsed uterus (I hope
that's the correct term?). She will be taking this for five days postpartum.
My hair stood on end when I heard but I would like to get some more info. I
understand from Hale that it is a lactation inhibitor through effects on
prolactin and that it is not recommended by the AAP for use in breastfeeding
mothers. However, my question is whether it effects the milk production
permenantly - will the milk come-in once the ergotamine is stopped? How long
after the last dose can this mother start feeding? She is currently pumping
in the hope that this will be the case.

I have checked the archives and found a Tom Hale post stating that
"Unfortunately I do not know, and cannot yet find, the length of suppression
following ergot exposure, but I would assume that prolactin production
could be restimulated with enough stimulation and some Reglan (30-40mg/day).
"

Just wondering if anyone has any more concrete information? Feel totally out
of my depth here, but hope that there is some positive information out
there!

yours,

Sara Bernard
