One of my three week old 37 week (7 lbs 4 oz bt wt) twin clients who had
just the day before had his best breastfeeding ever, taking in a full feed and
then lying peacefully for 45 minutes before drifting to sleep while his brother
tried nursing ,had a swallow study which showed aspiration. The ST wrote in
her instructions to the mother to d/c breastfeeding, pump, blend rice into his
EBM and repeat the swallow study in 2-3 months. This mom is 43, first babies,
a tough cookie and was really upset - he really hasn't had any symptoms of
aspiration except that on a bottle he is a slow feeder. Mother and I were both
curious about why she ordered the study in the first place. He's had a latch
problem but we had just overcome that. I know I should know this, having
heard Wolff and Glass twice but isn't it possible for an infant to have fewer
problems with swallowing on the breast than on a bottle. Am I just dreaming? He
truly had a perfect feeding the day before the swallow study. I remember
reading posts about giving rice before or after a nursing to try to accomplish
what they are trying to to with the bottle thickened with rice but I couldn't
come up with the right subject to pull it up.
