A friend of mine consulted me about a similar situation-- her baby had
lots of painful gas and green poop, and the pediatrician decided that her
baby was "lactose intolerant", thus "allergic to (mom's) milk" and told
her she should wean to soy formula! Of course, she called me in a frenzy
the same day after being told this. Upon further questioning, I found
out that the baby also had other signs of dairy sensitivity (wheezing,
exczema) and mom has history of "stomach problems" when she drinks milk
herself. I never heard the results of the elimination diet (she lives in
another state and we talk only infrequently now). But to top it off, in
the same month another Leader in our area had a call from a local mother
with an almost identical situation. The confusion between lactose
intolerant / dairy sensitive and the assumption that cow's milk and human
milk are the same wrt allergies and sensitivities seems to be common. It
seems to be all mixed up in many people's (inlcuding doctors') minds.

As a follow-up, my friend is of Bengali (Bangladesh) origin. Several
other friends of mine who are of Pakistani/Indian origin have had similar
problems and reported success with the dairy elimination diet. Is this a
known group for which dairy sensitivities are common?
