Okay, now that was an eye opener. I wanted to reach into my tv screen and
pop that man. Haha. He sounded so patronizining and paternal. I think that
what he said was not as important as how he said it. Grandfatherly, head
patting, tsk, tsk, poor women. I am about fed up with this attitude that women are
too dense to make a choice based on facts and even more irritated with those
who talk in that tone of voice that speaks to adults as if they are children.
And what a hypocritical thing to say -- AAP does not believe in using scare
tactics? Umm....should I tell you what the peds say to get a mom to vaccinate?
Now if telling a mom her child can end up in the hospital or dead isn't
scare tactics what is? Or how about the ob persuading a mom to be induced at 40
weeks when he tells her "if you wait your baby is in danger because your
placenta will break down and your baby could die." Um. Okay, so now I understand.
We can use scare tactics as often as needed as long as no one looses money in
the process.

The formula company connection was not even mentioned. The point was totally
missed. Amy did good. Spoke of research and facts while Dr. Johnston
focused on the women and how they would feel. How disturbing to make women feel
guilty if they choose to not breastfeed. The reporter final sentence irked me
too---don't want society to make women have a stigma for not breastfeeding.
Please we have so far to go before this country ever gets it that a stigma for
not breastfeeding is a long way off. First we have to be allowed to tell
mothers breastfeeding is more than a warm fuzzy feeling that would be nice if they
could "sit down and breastfeed." The reporter started wtih Amy, but
unfortunately ended on the note that moms should not feel guilty if they choose not to
breastfeed.

Happy New Year to all as we say good bye to 2003 and welcome in 2004.
