While initailly Merilee's suggestion to have breastfeeding as a
question on everyone's helath intake forms seems like a great idea,
I see a potential problem. While many may not know whether or not
they were breastfed, few of those that do will know how exclusive
that breastfeeding was. I worry that any statistics obtained will
be skewed because "any breastfeeding" will be lumped with
"exclusivly breastfed" when comparing with "not breastfed". Any
results may show little or no difference and it will be assumed by
too many that therefore breastfeeding didn't make any difference!
It's hard enough sometimes to get valid definitions in current
studies. How much more difficult in such a retrospective collection
of data.
This is not to discourage gathering information in this way, just a
warning that results may not be as reliable as we would like.
