I have just finished reading Marsha Walker's article in the LLL
Breastfeeding Abstracts for August 2003 called "Marketing of Infant
Formula: The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing". It is wonderful, and I
recommend it to everyone. I also had an RD who works here just get back
from the national ADA meeting in San Antonio. She attended the session
on infant formula and reports that a woman with MD, RD and IBCLC after
her name told them about studies that show that the formula with the
DHA/AA does improve visual acuity and brain development. I prefer to
believe Marsha, who states in her article that "Meta-analyses regarding
the addition of AHA/ARA to infant formula show that these formulas
confer no advantage to the infants consuming them, even though the
products cost as much as 15 to 33% more than standard formulas. The
thought of 30,000 RD's all now beliving the contrary makes me very sad.
