Kathy Leeper has observed the exact phenomenon Kermaline J. (Jean) Cotterman
has been writing about, the one which led to her describing the technique of
'reverse pressure softening' (which in Scandinavia is now becoming known as
'Cotterman's maneuver'). At the www.health-e-learning.com website you can
read an article about it on line. This is a growing problem wherever
overintervention in birth prevails, but it can arise even in home births
with no medications or IV fluids, if baby is not proficient and eager at
removing colostrum and milk frequently from birth on.
Jean Cotterman has posted on it previously, eloquently and in detail. I
strongly urge ANYONE working with post partum mothers to familiarize
themselves with her writings on the technique of RPS. What she doesn't know
about the nipple-areolar complex would fill a postage stamp.
cheers
